To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, ESI collaborated with Freedom 250 to produce Salute to America, a historic celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Bringing together a massive live audience, national and international viewers, and some of the most complex production and logistical requirements imaginable, the event was a true test of preparation, coordination, and adaptability.
Despite record-breaking heat and thunderstorms that moved through the area, the show carried on, although in a slightly modified format. Weather is one of the many variables that can impact a large-scale outdoor production, and events of this magnitude require teams to be prepared to adjust quickly while keeping the overall experience moving forward. Through close coordination across production, security, government partners, and other stakeholders, the event continued safely and successfully.
The celebration culminated in an extraordinary fireworks display. In honor of our nation’s 250th birthday, 840,537 fireworks were launched, surpassing the previous Guinness World Record for the largest firework display by 29,633 fireworks. It was a fitting spectacle for a milestone of this scale—and one that required an enormous amount of planning, coordination, and technical precision behind the scenes.
The production of an internationally viewed event requires extreme precision, redundancy, and interagency communication. Furthermore, executing an event on the National Mall presents a unique set of logistical challenges. With a venue that spans hundreds of acres, multiple agencies and stakeholders, significant security requirements, and a highly controlled operating environment, every movement and every minute matters.
Movements must be calculated and controlled, timelines must be concise, and contingency plans must be in place before they are needed. From staging and technical production to transportation, security, communications, and show flow, every element has to work together seamlessly. Much of this work happens out of sight, but it is what allows an event of this scale to appear effortless to the audience.
As President Trump said in his speech, “For two and a half centuries, our American republic has stood as the crowning achievement of human history. This country is the home of freedom. This is the land of liberty. And this is a flag. That’s the banner of the most extraordinary, most exceptional, most incredible nation ever to exist on the face of the earth.”
For ESI, being part of a celebration marking 250 years of American history was an incredible honor. Events of this magnitude are a reminder of why preparation, precision, and experience matter—and why the work behind the scenes is just as important as what happens on stage.
